關於本活動

After graduating from Oklahoma City University, Vincent Marmorale completed a Master's of Science Degree in Sociology/ Education from Long Island University/C/W Post in 1971, Vince began his career teaching social studies at the Sachem School District where he taught for thirty-three years. He was responsible for creating and implementing the Holocaust Studies Program for the junior high schools. After the success of this program, Mr. Marmorale developed a Prejudice Reduction Curriculum for the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades for the twelve elementary schools in the district. Vince personally visited each class with his prejudice reduction message. In addition, he presented workshops on Prejudice Reduction, the Holocaust and the Italian story on the local, state, and national levels. During the 1980s, Vince was asked to speak to a number of schools, synagogues and civic organizations about the lessons of the Holocaust. His presentations evolved into stressing the role of those who had the courage to care for their neighbors.  As a result of his dedication to human rights education, Mr. Marmorale was appointed Co-Chairperson of the New York State Council for the Social Studies (NYSCSS) Human Rights Committee. He was also awarded the Louis E. Yavner Award by the New York State Board of Regents. This award is given annually to a New York State teacher for outstanding contributions in the fields of Holocaust Studies and other violations of human rights. Vince has also received other educational awards. C.W. Post presented him with the C.W. Post College of Education Alumni of the Year and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction Outstanding Alumni Award. Additional awards include the Long Island Council for the Social Studies (LICSS) Outstanding Junior High Social Studies Teacher Award. The NYSCSS presented Vince with the SIRS Intellectual Academic Freedom Award which is given annually to individuals who have made a distinguishing contribution in the field of social studies by defending the principles of intellectual and academic freedom. In 1996, the Order Sons of Italy of New York State recognized Vince's contributions to Holocaust Studies and appointed him Chairperson to their Commission for Social Justice Holocaust Memorial Committee. The CSJ awarded Vince The Lehman LaGuardia Award for Civic Achievement in 2007. In 2008, The Gussy Award was presented by the LICSS to Vince for his service to the social studies. Continuing Vince's work to promote the little-known story of the saving of Jews in Italy by some Italians during the Holocaust, he made five trips to Italy. In January 2008, Mr. Marmorale traveled to Italy where he and a survivor were the honored guests of the President of Italy. In June 2008, Vince and three survivors had an audience with Pope Benedict where the survivors thanked the Catholic Church for saving their lives. In September 2008, Vince journeyed again to Benevento, Italy with additional survivors where they attended a symposium on the Holocaust. They also visited two internment camps in Campagna and Ferramonti. This extensive research is part of the documentary project that is the culmination of a life-long passion to understand the moral imperatives from studying the Holocaust. In 2010, Mr. Marmorale founded Italy and the Holocaust, Inc. (The Foundation), a 501c3, not-for-profit-organization to share the little known story of the role of Italy and individual Italians in saving approximately 80%/32,000 of the Jews in Italy during the Holocaust. The goal of the Foundation is to share stories of survival that were possible because people had the courage to care for their neighbors. The Foundation completed a feature-length documentary, My Italian Secret: The Forgotten Heroes of the Holocaust, which tells a heroic story that, was all but lost to history, until now. The film recounts how WWII bicycling idol Gino Bartali, physician Giovanni Borromeo and other Italians worked with Jewish leaders and high-ranking officials of the Catholic Church, risking their lives by defying the Nazis to save thousands of Italy's Jews.  My Italian Secret was selected to be in the Hamptons International Film Festival and the Rome Film Festival in 2014. In March of 2015, the film had its theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles and has been screened at numerous film festivals around the world. In 2017, the documentary was shown at both NYSCSS and NCSS conferences. The documentary has become an integral part of a number of social studies curriculums and Italian language programs. In 2017, the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Israel, contacted the Italy and the Holocaust Foundation requesting permission to show the documentary in their Visual Center in connection with teacher training seminars and other educational conferences. In addition, they wanted to include the lesson plans and the documentary in their collection/database and offer them for personal viewing. As a result of Vince's continuous efforts to share this special Italian story NYSCSS in 2021 presented him with The Distinguished Educator Award. Also in 2021, The American Association of Teachers of Italian-Long Island recognized Vince for Exemplary Dedication to the Teaching and Promotion of Italian Culture.  Vince's goal has been to share these stories of desperation and courage in order to educate future generations about the lessons of the Holocaust "If people are not indifferent, things can be different."
