ART OF ITALY: From the Colosseum to the Altarpiece

Course Description:
Our History of Italian Art course will allow you to learn in depth about the history and social context in which these masterpieces were designed and executed. The course is designed to show, by means of slides and lectures, the development of art in Italy in relation to the rest of Europe and offers students an introduction to the most important artistic styles (Ancient Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque). Students will become acquainted with the most important works the Colosseum to the paintings of Caravaggio, while learning about the most significant historical and social events that accompanied them.

Week 1 October 14th – What is Art History? Understanding the Greeks and
their Relationship to Ancient Rome (The Classical Orders, The Parthenon, Nike of Samothrace, Alexander the Great, Laocoön, Horses of Saint Mark)

Week October 21st – Ancient Roman Art (Tusculum Bust of Julius Caesar,
August of Primaporta, Trajan’s Column, The Pantheon, The Baths of Caracalla)

Week 3 November 4th – Medieval & Early Renaissance Art I (The Fall of Rome,
Giotto, Duccio, Cimabue)

Week 4 November 18th – Early Renaissance Art II (Donatello, Brunelleschi,
Masaccio)

Week 5 November 25th — Renaissance Art I (Botticelli – The Birth of Spring,
Leonardo DaVinci – The Last Supper, Virgin of the Rocks, The Adoration of the Maggi)

If the Professor wants to skip Thanksgiving Week the class will be then held on December 2nd
